Toughened Balustrade Glass Panels

Glass balustrades for stairs, delivered direct
Let your home breathe with a made-to-order staircase balustrade. For decades, traditional timber balustrades and spindle designs have been the architectural standard for staircases, balconies and landings. The issue? Heavy timber can cast shadows across your space.

If you need a solution that lets light travel through your lounge unobstructed, our balustrade glass panels are the answer. Replace solid barriers with high-clarity, toughened glass and get protection for your staircases without visual weight. Purchase directly from us, and you’ll get toughened balustrade glass cut to size in 8mm or 10mm, toughened to BS EN 12150, for post and handrail systems where the posts and handrail carry the load. Frameless and channel-fixed balustrades need thicker or laminated glass, so ask us before ordering.

At Toughened Glass Direct, we provide the exact same high-spec toughened glass you see in luxury commercial developments but at prices accessible for a weekend DIY project.

What is balustrade glass?

glass balustrades on dark staircase

Balustrade glass panels are a type of safety glazing used in guarding systems that protect against falls at changes in level (e.g., staircases, balconies, landings).

In England, you can find the relevant guidance in Approved Document K, with specific technical guidance on barriers and infill panels in BS 6180.

For most single-family homes, the minimum guarding height is 900mm for internal stairs and landings, increasing to 1,100 mm for external balconies and roof edges. But we know that every opening and installation is different.

Your glass specification should always match your specific fixing system and the requirements of your professional installer.

Why use balustrade glass

Clear sightlines

A staircase balustrade made using glass can make a home feel much less enclosed.

The heavy rails or closely spaced spindles of timber or wrought-iron staircases look beautiful (and are usually the go-to for period properties), but their solid construction can obstruct natural light.

With our made-to-order balustrade glass panels, you don’t have to miss out on sunlight or compromise safety.

Safety-first material

Toughened glass is engineered to be four to five times stronger than standard float glass – in homes and high-traffic spaces, safety should never be an afterthought. In the unlikely event the glass fails, it’s designed to crumble into smaller, less dangerous pieces.

Low maintenance

Timber requires regular staining, and metal can corrode – both of these materials need regular upkeep to look their best. But our toughened balustrade glass is exceptionally low maintenance.

For busy family homes, give your glass a quick wipe-down to remove fingerprints.

Made to your exact size

With Toughened Glass Direct, you don’t have to pay for a large, architectural package.

Order the exact panel you need in the right size, thickness, shape and finish for your project. We’ve made it easy for homeowners to pay for professional-grade glass with no inflated minimum order expectations.

FAQs

A glass staircase balustrade serves as a safety barrier in areas with a change in level. You’ll typically see it used on staircases, internal landings, garden decking, and balconies.

It depends on the application and local building regulations.

– Toughened glass: A strong, impact-resistant option for domestic applications.

– Toughened laminated glass: Two layers of glass bonded with a plastic interlayer. If the glass breaks, this layer holds the fragments in place.

Always consult with your installer to confirm which specification is required for your specific application.

Yes, that’s what we’re here for! Big retailers selling standard ‘off-the-shelf’ sizes won’t have the kind of flexibility we do. Even if you just need a small replacement panel, we cut your glass to your specific millimetre requirements.

Don’t be pushed into oversized trade-style minimums – work with us for custom-cut, professional-grade glass.

If the edges of your staircase balustrade will be visible, the answer is usually always yes. Unless your glass is being fully recessed into a deep frame where the edges are completely hidden, polished edges will make sure your staircase is safe to use.

Yes, toughened glass is the industry standard.

The material has undergone a thermal tempering process, meaning it’s well-equipped to deal with the pressures and impacts of domestic guarding. All of our glass is manufactured to meet BS EN 12150 standards for this exact purpose.
