Toughened Balcony Glass

What is balcony glass?

Toughened balcony glass is manufactured from premium toughened (or tempered) glass. As a specialised safety glass, the material undergoes a rigorous thermal treatment that makes it up to five times stronger than regular annealed glass. When used to craft a balcony, it can withstand high wind loads, accidental impacts, and sudden temperature shifts.

At Toughened Glass Direct, we can provide tempered glass for balconies or smaller domestic projects (individual, architectural-grade panes that you can slot right into your existing frames).

Where can balcony glass be used?

Toughened balcony glass can be used wherever you need a clear barrier. You can use our made-to-measure pieces for a wide range of domestic projects around the home:

  • Juliet balconies: Give upper-floor French doors a barrier that maximises natural light.
  • Decking/patios: Create an invisible windbreak or safety partition around your raised garden decking.
  • Replacement panels: Accidents happen: if a pebble from a mower or severe weather has shattered an existing pane, you can order a single piece of glass to drop straight into your current framework.
  • Garden zoning/retaining walls: Use smaller glass panels to safely separate seating areas from hot tubs, pools, or split-level garden drops.

Made to measure for your project

We don’t believe in forcing standard, off-the-shelf sizes into a custom space. Every balcony is different, and at Toughened Glass Direct, we manufacture every single pane of toughened glass to your exact specifications. Use our toughened glass panels for your balcony, and they can be specified around the needs of your project, including the size, thickness, edge finish and any additional details (e.g., drilled holes, radius corners or shaped cuts where required).

FAQs

Usually, two main types of safety glass are used for balconies: toughened (monolithic) glass and toughened laminated glass.

Toughened glass: The most common choice for framed balustrades. Toughened balcony glass is heat-treated and significantly stronger than standard glass.

Toughened laminated glass: Consisting of two sheets that have been bonded together with a transparent interlayer (often required for frameless systems or high-rise balconies, because if the glass breaks, the interlayer holds the fragments in place).

We offer a range of thicknesses at Toughened Glass Direct.

Yes, we specialise in made-to-measure orders. Provided the correct dimensions and specifications are supplied before manufacture, we allow you to order glass cut to your exact millimetre specifications.

Toughened balcony glass cannot be altered once it has been heat-treated, so when you’re filling a small gap in a railing or replacing a single broken panel, it’s essential to confirm thickness, polished edges, holes, notches or shaped panels.

Yes, using tempered glass for balconies is exceptionally safe. The material undergoes thermal tempering, which makes it approximately 5 times stronger than regular glass.

According to UK safety standards (BS EN 12150), toughened glass is designed so that if it does break, it shatters into small, blunt-edged pebbles (not long, sharp shards).

For extra security (especially in high-altitude applications), many customers opt for toughened laminated glass. These materials offer an extra layer of protection by remaining integral even if damaged.

Yes, balcony glass is specifically engineered for outdoor use. You can use toughened glass panels for balconies, decking areas, patios and garden balustrades because it’s resilient against British weather.

It is also UV-stable, meaning it won’t discolour under sunlight, and a simple routine of cleaning with soapy water or a glass specialist spray is enough to keep it looking brand new for years.
