Toughened Safety Glass

What is safety glass?

Toughened safety glass (also called tempered safety glass) is engineered to be stronger and safer than standard (annealed) glass. It’s manufactured by heating regular glass to over 600°C, then allowing it to cool.

The thermal process changes the internal tension of the glass, making it up to five times stronger (and resistant to thermal shock). If you’re looking for made-to-measure pieces for your next home improvement project, Toughened Glass Direct is here to help.

We supply tempered safety glass panels, cut to size for repairs and upgrades, including single panels or custom pieces.

Where can safety glass be used?

Toughened safety glass can be used in many places around the home and garden. When you’re upgrading architectural features or glass structures, our custom-cut pieces are an affordable way to get the quality of tempered glass on a budget.

  • Kitchen & bathroom splashbacks: Entirely safe to use directly behind hot cookers, thanks to the high thermal resistance of tempered glass.
  • Protective table tops: An excellent way to shield wooden tables or outdoor patio furniture from daily wear.
  • Glass shelving: Strong enough to hold heavy items in kitchens or bathrooms.
  • Sheds and greenhouses: We can create tempered safety glass windows for garden sheds and greenhouses.
  • Fireplace hearths: Designed to withstand temperature changes without cracking.

Custom cut for your project

With Toughened Glass Direct, your glass comes cut to size. Provide us with your precise measurements, and our team will deliver a piece with your specified thickness, polished edges, radius corners, holes, notches or shaped details.

(Note: These details must be confirmed before the glass is toughened, as tempered glass cannot be altered after processing).

FAQs

No, but the terms are often used interchangeably. Safety glass is a broad term for glass designed to reduce the risk of injury if it breaks. Toughened safety glass undergoes a specialised thermal process to alter its internal structure.

However, safety glass can also include other options, such as laminated glass: it is manufactured differently and behaves differently if broken.

Yes, tempered safety glass is much stronger than normal annealed glass.

Through a rigorous tempering process (which involves heating standard glass to temperatures between 600-700ºc and then rapidly cooling it) toughened glass becomes up to five times stronger than glass of the same thickness.

Yes, but the timing of the cut is critical. Tempered safety glass panels must be completely measured, cut to size, and have any required holes drilled or edges polished before the thermal toughening process begins.

Once the glass has been tempered, its internal structure is locked under high tension, and any attempt to alter it will cause the panel to shatter.

Yes! We often create tempered safety glass windows for greenhouses, balustrades, balconies, canopies, and protecting garden furniture.

If you’re working on an exterior glazing project, we can manufacture made-to-measure safety glass to your exact specifications.
