Toughened Glass Table Tops

Why do we need toughened glass table tops?

Your table will take some bumps over the years. In fact, it only takes a few weeks of normal use for the damage to start: scratches from keys and toys, water rings from mugs, heat marks, spills and general wear-and-tear.

Glass table tops, however, are specifically designed to shield furniture from everyday impact. At Toughened Glass Direct, we offer glass tabletops cut to size, so you can see the beauty of a solid oak dining table or vintage desk just beneath.

High-quality protection shouldn’t be reserved for large-scale commercial projects: that’s why we’ve made the process more efficient for domestic customers. By dealing directly with us, the need for complex contractor consultations disappears. It’s tempered glass table tops with straightforward service from Toughened Glass Direct.

1. ATABLE

What you could get with our glass table tops

1. Safety first

Each of our toughened glass table tops is made from toughened safety glass, produced to British/European Standard BS EN 12150. At home, this is what matters: toughened glass is designed so that, in the unlikely event it breaks, it fragments into small pieces with generally blunt edges, not dangerous, jagged shards. For households with children or pets, this level of security is non-negotiable.

2. Precision finishing

Our glass table tops feel as good as they look. We pay close attention to finishing details: polished edges create a smooth, clean perimeter that’s both safer to handle and more premium-looking on exposed edges.

For family homes, radius corners soften the profile and help prevent nasty bumps.

3. Versatility

Tabletops have many applications, including, but not limited to:

  • Coffee tables and sideboards
  • Home office desks
  • Garden furniture replacement glass
  • DIY furniture projects (crates, barrels, upcycled bases)

How it works: 3 simple steps

  1. Measure

Grab a tape measure to confirm the exact size you need (measure twice, order once). If you’re fitting inside a frame or recess, take a few measurements and use the smallest for the best fit.

2. Customise

Choose the details that suit your table and how you’ll use it — including glass thickness (popular options include 4mm, 6mm or 10mm) and your preferred edge finish for a neat, safe feel.

3. Delivery

Once your order is placed, we take it from there. We cut, toughen, and polish your glass to your exact specs before shipping it directly to your door.

Why choose Toughened Glass Direct?

We treat each customer like a priority. Do you only need a single tempered glass tabletop for a coffee table or a sideboard? Our business has been built to serve the home decorator and DIYer with the same precision the pros expect.

  1. Expertly tempered for strength

Safety is the foundation of everything we do. Each of our glass table tops undergoes a specialist thermal tempering process, increasing its strength by up to five times compared to standard glass.

2. Affordable quality

Traditionally, high-spec toughened glass was only accessible through specialist contractors or large-scale trade orders, but we’ve broken that barrier.

Deal directly with us, and you can access trade-level quality and industrial-grade materials at transparent, consumer-friendly prices.

3. Specialist focus

Sick of long lead times? We’re set up for direct-to-consumer orders and smaller jobs, so you’re not competing with large commercial projects for attention.

FAQs

It depends on how the glass is supported. For furniture protectors (where the glass sits directly on a solid wooden or metal surface), 4mm or 6mm is the standard.

Or, for structural tops where the glass sits on a frame without support underneath (or where there’s overhang), 10mm or thicker should provide extra rigidity.

Our tempered glass table tops have much higher resistance to thermal stress than standard annealed glass – that’s because they’ve been professionally toughened, so they aren’t damaged by hot mugs, teapots, or warm dinner plates.

We specialise in rectangles, squares, and circles. If you need a specific template or radius corners, let us know during quoting, and we’ll advise on what’s possible.

We recommend using small, clear silicone spacers (also known as bumpons). These are nearly invisible once the glass is laid down. Placing these under one of our glass table tops (cut to size) should add grip and minimise slipping.
